Random Thought #8

Setting a public goal is a good way to guarantee much difficulty in achieving the goal.

No joke. I'm beginning to think I may have done better at a particular goal if I hadn't blabbed about it.

This is why I really regret telling everyone that my goal is to become Pope.

Really? It totally shames me into meeting my goal. I shame easily.

It's like some big cosmic smackdown. I say I'm going to do at least three blog posts a week and then I end up working 14 hour days at work. Finding time to go pee is hard enough; writing something of substance is impossible.

Jane, you can wear flowing gowns and funny hats without becoming Pope, you know.

Becca, I get what you're saying, hence the random thought and meme posts this week. I've "met" my goal this week. I just end up feeling like I've only done the bare minimum.

Lydia, weight loss and quitting smoking goals resulted in some shame-faced admittals of failure. I think the public accountability can help but some goals require several tries before success.

It depends on the goal, for me. Sometimes, I set a goal and get rebellious about it. Like I'm trying to prove to the world that I'm just that big of a dork.

Other times, I can set a goal and talking about it reminds me that I should actually be doing something to reach it.

Good points, Solace... the getting rebellious about it would probably make a big difference for me. As for your other point, I suppose talking about quitting smoking is getting me to the point where I call my doctor and try the other med (Chantix) and see if it works better for me than the Zyban.
